Oregano
Origanum vulgare (Labiatae)
Also known as wild marjoram, joy of the mountain and Mexican sage.
Can be found in Cromptons Kitchen Italian blend.
Oregano has a spicy aroma. The plants are bushy, with woody stems, and small grey-green leaves. The flowers are pink or mauve, and form in clusters in late summer.
It is prolific in its growth, and likes dry, chalky, fertile ground, favouring hillsides. It is grown both as a crop, and domestically as a common garden plant.
Both the leaves and flowers can be used, either fresh or dried (preferably naturally in a shady place).
Oregano is particularly used in the culinary world for flavouring meat dishes and salads, and, of course, as an additive to a Pizza*. It is also popular as a herbal infusion and in as an additive in the brewing of beer.
Apart from in cookery Oregano has many uses. Amongst others, these include:-
- antiseptic leaves which are reputed to be good for toothache when chewed.
- beneficial when added to bathwater.
- as a treatment of ailments ranging from coughs and colds to stomach upsets and indigestion. (As with any medicines, you should seek medical advice before using as a remedy, and pregnant ladies are advised against using Oregano (or any form or marjoram).
- distilled into an oil to use in perfumery and cosmetics.
* Cromptons Kitchen uses dried oregano in its recipes – however, due to the fact that all our herbs and spices are blended with wet natural grey sea salt, they retain their full flavour for much longer, and it is therefore unnecessary to use large quantities to achieve great results. Always refer to the 'use by' date on our products to ensure that you gain maximum flavour.

Tips 'n' Tricks
Sterlising your Jars
The easiest method for sterilising jars is to fill them with boiling water, let them stand for several minutes, then tip the water out. Do not dry the jars. Fill immediately with hot contents. Use a dry cloth to hold the hot jars.
