Sodium - does your intake worry you?
We cannot ignore the facts:-
- many people in the Western world have too high a sodium intake.
- too high a sodium intake can lead to medical problems associated with high blood pressure and strokes*.
- Over three quarters of the salt in the diet comes from food which has been subjected to rigorous processing, leading to such significant flavour and nutrition loss that extra salt is often added to compensate for lack of taste.
If you, like many of us, are concerned about your intake of sodium, read on.
US sodium Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) of less than 2400mg (2.4g) is higher than the UK Recommended Nutritional Intake (RNI) whose upper limit for sodium is 1600mg (1.6g).* However, the Food Standards Agency gives 6g of salt (which is equivalent to 2400mg (2.4g) of sodium) per day, as a guide.**
– or in everyday language – 2/3 teaspoon of salt. That is to say, ALL salt and sodium consumed, including sodium used in cooking, at the table and found in ready prepared and processed products.
Consider this:-
A small sprinkle of Cromptons Kitchen Gourmet Blended Natural Grey Celtic Sea Salts would contain in the region of 50mg (0.5g) of sodium.
One burger from a Fast Food Chain would contain approximately 84mg (0.84g) of sodium (210mg (2.1g) of salt.**
However, think of the healthy benefits and intense flavour you could have with eating freshly prepared food, using Cromptons Kitchen Gourmet Blended Natural Grey Celtic Sea Salts range to enhance your efforts. An easy, fun and delicious way of improving your diet, and reducing your sodium intake all at the same time!

*Sodium RDA – Lower for Those with High Blood Pressure
People with high blood pressure should consume less sodium as recent research has shown that people consuming diets of 1500mg (1.5g) of sodium had better blood pressure lowering benefits. These lower-sodium diets also can keep blood pressure from rising and help blood pressure medicines work better.
